The start
The countdown card, what the app does in each gun mode, stamping a gun by hand, calling the course, and boats over early.
Also known as: start, start sequence, countdown, warning, preparatory, one minute, gun, undo gun, re-gun, over early, OCS, individual recall, general recall, call course, iStart, I Start, press start, postponement, first warning in 5 min
Start is read at a glance from a few feet away with a horn in the other hand, so nothing on it moves or resizes during a countdown.
The card
The dark card at the top is the next signal: NEXT SIGNAL with its time, the countdown in big figures, and under it the signal or signals due at that second, each with what to do with the flags (Raise numeral 1 for PHRF A). When two things fall on one second, say PHRF A’s start and PHRF B’s warning in a rolling sequence, both are listed, start first. Then gives the signal after that; last the one just gone.
The pill at the top right says who makes the sound. In BY HAND and OFF THE CLOCK it is the sound itself, 1 sound or 1 long sound. With an iStart it says PRESS START at a warning the box needs a press for, and iStart at every signal the box sounds on its own.
The last five seconds to every signal are felt, not heard: a tap on 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 and a long buzz on 0. In BY HAND the long buzz is the cue for the horn. The phone never plays a sound; the horn is what people listen for.
Which press, with an iStart
The box runs one class’s sequence from a press of its START button, and its rolling modes carry on into the next class without another press. So the app asks for a press at every warning that does not land on another class’s start: the first class, and any class after a gap. A warning on the same second as a start is the box rolling on. Set the box to the right mode before the first warning; the app does not pick it.
The class rows
Under the mode line, one card per class: her flag, her start, a Call course button, and GUN. The course is called here, at the warning, because that is when most sailing instructions say to announce it; the button shows the course once called.
GUN stamps the start as the horn sounds. The stamped second overrides the scheduled time for scoring, in every mode. Tapped by mistake, UNDO GUN is there for five seconds; leave it and the scheduled time stands. RE-GUN on a started class stamps it again.
In OFF THE CLOCK and iStart the app writes the gun down itself at the planned second for every class this screen was open to see. A phone opened at 20:30 does not back-fill guns it was not there for.
Over early
Once a class has started its boats appear as tiles under OVER EARLY. Tap a boat that was over at the gun; tap again when she returns. A general recall puts the class back in the sequence.
A race set on the water
A later race on a regatta day has no times until the committee is ready. FIRST WARNING IN 5 MIN sets the whole sequence from the next whole minute plus five, keeping the series’ gaps; change it on Setup afterwards if you need to.
