Building an event, and not losing your edits
Where a new event comes from, what happens to half-finished edits when the browser reloads or you press Back, and the series rating rule under Settings.
Also known as: new event, builder, notice of race, NOR, sailing instructions, edit event, unsaved changes, lost my edits, reload, back button, restore, discard, series rating rule, rating locked, PHRF change mid series, settings, scoring
A new event
New event on the Events page starts the builder. Drop in the notice of race and the sailing instructions and the builder reads them: the schedule, the classes, the sequence, the scoring, the fees and the rules, each with the clause it came from so you can check it. A new event saves itself as you go; nothing is public until you publish the listing.
Editing an existing event
Open the event and press Edit on the card you want. The builder opens on that step with the event as it stands.
Two things protect your work:
- A reload keeps your edits. If the browser reloads, or you close the tab and come back, the builder offers them back in an amber bar: Restore puts them on top of the event as it now stands, Discard throws them away. Edits are kept in that browser for a week, and dropped if somebody else saved the event in between, so you never restore over their change without seeing it.
- The browser’s Back button asks first. With unsaved edits, Back, a link elsewhere, or closing the tab brings up Unsaved changes, with Stay, Leave without saving and Save and leave. Leaving without saving drops the kept edits too.
Saving writes the event and clears the kept copy. Nothing is kept for a brand new event, because a new event saves itself.
The series rating rule
Under Settings, then Scoring, the Series rule says what happens when PHRF changes a boat’s rating mid-series. The three choices are the ones clubs actually write:
- Locked when the series starts: the rating on file at the first race stands for every race; a later change is noted, not applied. The default, and what MDRVMF’s notice says.
- Locked at entry: the rating on the entry form stands for every race.
- Current rating each race: each race scores the rating in effect that day; when PHRF changes one, the office adopts it and re-scores earlier races by hand. What DRYC’s Berger-Stein notice says.
The club sets it once under Club defaults and every event inherits it; the builder also reads it from the notice of race when the clause is there. Under a locked rule a moved certificate shows on the rating check as PHRF list now reads 135; this series keeps 138, so nothing is re-scored behind your back.
Which rating column
A race’s classes can sail different courses, and PHRF publishes a rating per course type. Scoring uses the column of the course each class was called on (W/L, RLC or OWC), falling back to the class’s column, then the series column, then the entered rating. The Scoring step says which it used, scored on W/L ratings, and the sheet says it too. A rating pinned by the office for one boat, or a fix for one race, still wins.
