Setup, the plan for the race
What to settle on the dock before the first warning, how the guns are run (by hand, off the clock, or with an iStart), courses, and the PRO's notes.
Also known as: setup, plan, first warning, warning time, start times, confirm the plan, boat tiles, sail number first, guns, by hand, off the clock, iStart, I Start, correction factor, TCF, courses, hold a course, PRO notes, notes, light mode, dark mode, appearance, reset the race
Slipside RC runs a race from the phone in five steps along the bottom: Setup, Check-in, Start, Finish, Review. Setup is the plan, and it is done on the dock, in the light, with signal if you have it. Everything on it saves to this race’s log on the phone and syncs to the office when it can.
The race
The top of Setup names the race and says how many boats are on the entry list in how many classes. Only boats entered in this race are on it. RATINGS underneath is the office’s PHRF check, a heads-up and never a gate.
This phone
Name is how this phone appears in the office’s log. BOAT TILES picks what a boat’s tile leads with, SAIL NUMBER or BOAT NAME; most clubs live by sail numbers. Both are per phone, not per race.
Light or dark is on the Profile tab under APPEARANCE, and switches in place.
The start plan
FIRST WARNING is the time of the first warning signal, as the racing rules name it, not the first start. -5 and +5 move every class together; tap the time to type one. Under it, one row per class with its warning and its start, in the series’ order and gaps.
HOW ARE THE GUNS RUN? has three answers:
- BY HAND: you sound the horn and tap GUN as it goes. The stamped second is what is scored.
- OFF THE CLOCK: the app counts down and buzzes at each signal; you still sound the horn, but the app writes the guns down itself at the planned second. A hand stamp still overrides.
- iStart: a Balboa Racing iStart box sounds the horns from its own timer. The app counts down with it, tells you when to press START on the box, and records the guns off its own clock as in OFF THE CLOCK. Nothing is wired between them; both run on quartz and stay within a second over a sequence. See The start.
CORRECTION FACTOR · B appears for time-on-time scoring: the club’s bands, usually 480 heavy, 550 normal, 600 light.
Courses
COURSES shows the series’ course library, one card per course with its marks and distance. Hold a card and every class still to start sails it; the card says ALL CLASSES. To give one class a different course, use the course box on that class’s row below. Any class can still be changed on Start, at its warning, which is when the sailing instructions have most committees call it.
PRO notes
PRO NOTES opens a window to type a note about the day: a postponement and why, a mark moved, a boat that retired by radio. Each note is stamped with the time and kept with the race, printed on the finish sheet and shown on the office’s race page. Notes cannot be edited or deleted; a correction is another note. The same button is on Review.
Confirm
CONFIRM THE PLAN writes the start times and the gun mode into the race’s record; the button then reads PLAN CONFIRMED. Change anything and confirm again. RESET THIS RACE at the bottom throws the whole log away, after a hold.
Still stuck? Email support@slipside.app and say which club and which race; a race officer’s question is answered the same day.
